STORRS, Conn. (AP) - Connecticut Athletic Director Warde Manuel says he is not a candidate for the same job at Virginia Tech.

Manuel had been mentioned recently on websites, talk radio and published reports as a serious candidate to replace Jim Weaver, who is stepping down after 16 years in Blacksburg.

Manuel was hired two years ago at UConn after leading the athletic department at the University of Buffalo. He issued a statement Wednesday saying he is not a candidate at Virginia Tech, and has not interviewed or been contacted by that school about the job.

He says he’s “very happy as the Director of Athletics at UConn.”

Manuel has overseen the transition of the school from the Big East to the American Athletic Conference and made several major hires, including Kevin Ollie as men’s basketball coach and, most recently, Bob Diaco as head football coach.
