An 8-year-old boy died early Monday morning after saving six of his family members from a blazing mobile home, New York firefighters said Tuesday.
Tyler J. Doohan is from East Rochester but was staying with relatives in the nearby community of Penfield and noticed a fire in the trailer, CNN reported. Penfield Fire Chief Chris Ebmeyer said firefighters responded to the call for help in the early morning hours — while Tyler apparently braved the smoke and flames to wake six others in the home, including a 4-year-old and a 6-year-old, and get them out to safety.
Tyler then went back into the burning home to help his disabled uncle leave, Mr. Ebmeyer said.
“By that time, the fire had traveled to the back of the trailer,” Mr. Ebmeyer said, in CNN. “Unfortunately, they both succumbed to heat and smoke.
The bodies of the two were found next to each other in the back bedroom, he said. Tyler’s grandfather was also killed in the fire, and his body was discovered in the front room.
The cause of the fire is under investigation, but firefighters think it’s accidental.
