NEW YORK (AP) - While the provocative musical “The Threepenny Opera” celebrates lowlifes, the upcoming production by the Atlantic Theater Company will star some acting royalty - Tony Award nominee Laura Osnes, Academy Award winner F. Murray Abraham and Emmy Award winner Michael Park.
The Atlantic announced the 14-member line-up Wednesday, which also includes Tony nominee Mary Beth Peil, and Broadway veterans Sally Murphy and Rick Holmes. Previews start March 12 for an eight-week run.
The revival of the Bertolt Brecht-Kurt Weill masterpiece will be directed by Martha Clarke, a choreographer and director whose best-known original work is “The Garden of Earthly Delights.”
Brecht’s biting, bracing book, based on John Gay’s “The Beggar’s Opera,” tells the scabrous tale of lowlifes in Victorian England as it rails against the capitalist system and the oppression of the common man.
Osnes is jumping from the Broadway stage as Cinderella to play Polly Peachum; Abraham, who won an Oscar for “Amadeus,” will play Mr. Peachum; and Park, the “As the World Turns” star most recently seen on Broadway in the revivals of “Cat on a Hot Tin Roof” and “How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying,” plays Macheath.
“The Threepenny Opera” marks only the third time the Atlantic Theater Company has mounted a musical in the company’s nearly 30 year history.
