ST. LOUIS (AP) - An office worker has been sentenced to three years and five months in prison for embezzling more than $2 million.
The U.S. attorney’s office said 63-year-old Elizabeth Byrne of St. Louis was sentenced Wednesday for mail fraud. From 1997 to 2013, Byrne worked as an office manager and assistant for various business owned by an individual referred to in court documents only as her employer.
Her duties included managing and paying the employer’s personal bills and attending to the employer’s personal schedule. Byrne admitted with her plea that she made blank checks signed by the employer payable to herself instead of paying the employer’s personal expenses.
Byrne also admitted to shredding incriminating checks and falsifying bookkeeping entries. The scheme was uncovered when she was on vacation.
