GRAND PRAIRIE, Texas (AP) - Leaders of a Dallas-area city have voted to ban smoking in most public places amid health concerns.

The Grand Prairie City Council on Tuesday night approved the ordinance. Mayor Ron Jensen says officials needed to get smoking out of restaurants.

The Dallas Morning News (https://dallasne.ws/KEAkFT ) reports a 1986 ordinance allowed smoking inside restaurants with enclosed nonsmoking areas.

The new ordinance won’t take effect for at least a month as affected businesses are notified via mail.

The measure bars smoking inside most public places including hospitals or health care facilities, restaurants and sports arenas. The ban also applies to city-owned or -operated facilities.

Smoking will still be allowed in Grand Prairie bars, nightclubs, billiard halls, hookah lounges, tobacco stores, horse racing’s Lone Star Park, Lynn Creek Park and Loyd Park.
