FORT CARSON, Colo. (AP) - The Army is re-equipping a Fort Carson brigade with Stryker combat vehicles instead of tanks, a move designed to make the post’s combat units more adaptable.
Fort Carson said Wednesday the 1st Brigade Combat Team’s conversion will start in March and take about 10 months.
The Stryker will replace the brigade’s Abrams tanks. The Stryker is designed to deploy quickly and take over some of the roles of tanks and Bradley Fighting Vehicles.
The lighter-weight Stryker also uses less fuel than the tank.
Area business leaders and a military analyst told the Colorado Springs Gazette (https://tinyurl.com/njqs6x6 ) the change is good news for Fort Carson. They say it makes Fort Carson more responsive to the Army’s needs and signals that the post is part of the Defense Department’s long-term planning.
