ROME, N.Y. (AP) - The last available piece of federally owned land from the former Griffiss Air Force Base in central New York has a new owner.
The Air Force Civil Engineer Center transferred the parcel, known as Building 101, to the Oneida County Industrial Development Agency on Tuesday. It includes a hangar and apron area used for aircraft repair and maintenance.
The Air Force is retaining approximately one-fourth of the building for research and development.
The former Air Force base in Rome closed in the early 1990s and was renamed Griffiss Business and Technology Park in honor of Lt. Col. Townsend E. Griffiss. He was the first U.S. airman killed in the line of duty in World War II.
The air base supported electronic research and bomber missions during its active-duty installation.
