SEATTLE (AP) - Seattle Children’s hospital has notified about 100 patients they may be at risk of infection from improperly cleaned colonoscopy equipment.

Dr. Danielle Zerr says the risk of infection is very low but the hospital doesn’t want to take any chances.

The Seattle Times reports (https://bit.ly/1mtFkc7 ) the patients have been offered free blood tests for hepatitis and HIV.

The hospital said Wednesday the cleaning lapse was discovered in November and involved two special scopes that require extra attention. Technicians weren’t trained enough on cleaning procedures before the scopes were reused.

A colonoscopy is a procedure in which a doctor using a flexible tube with a camera examines the inside of the bowel.
