ALPENA, Mich. (AP) - Bitter cold is lingering across Michigan, with readings below zero and up to 14 inches of new snow causing widespread highway closings along the Lake Michigan shoreline of the Lower Peninsula.
The National Weather Service reports Wednesday morning lows of 20 degrees below zero in Alpena in the northeastern Lower Peninsula.
The temperature reached minus 16 at Ann Arbor and on Drummond Island in northern Lake Huron.
The weather service says large stretches of highway closed because of snow, which reached 14 inches in Newaygo County and a foot in Ottawa County.
State police say 49-year-old Kristine McKinzey of Iron River died Wednesday morning after losing control of her vehicle on a snowy road and striking a snow plow in Iron County’s Bates Township in the western Upper Peninsula.
