MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) - A summary of action in the Alabama Legislature on Tuesday, the fourth meeting day of the regular session:
HOUSE=
-Passed a bill to make it a crime for a state or local tax official to audit a group because of its political views. Goes to Senate.
-Passed a bill to allow health care workers to decline to participate in an abortion, sterilization, cloning or human stem cell research if they have moral, religious or ethical objections. Goes to Senate.
SENATE=
-Debated, but did not vote on, a bill to allow citizens to cast emergency absentee ballots when the governor declares a state of emergency, such as a hurricane approaching the Alabama coast.
AGENDA=
-Senate Health Committee meets at noon Wednesday in room 304 of the Statehouse to consider legislation restricting smoking in work places.
-Senate Fiscal Responsibly and Accountability Committee meets at 10 a.m. Wednesday in room 304 to consider the “Taxpayers’ Bill of Rights” legislation.
-Senate Judiciary Committee meets at 1 p.m. Wednesday in room 325 to consider open meetings legislation.
-House Judiciary Committee meets at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday in room 123 to consider a bill to speed up appeals in death penalty cases.
-House Public Safety Committee meets at 9 a.m. Wednesday in room 418 to consider legislation legalizing wiretapping to investigate some crimes.
-House Ways and Means-Education Committee meets at 9 a.m. Wednesday in room 617 to consider legislation providing for using electronic textbooks in public schools.
-Senate meets at 3 p.m. Wednesday and House at 3:30 p.m.
