COVINGTON, La. (AP) - With temperatures expected to dip into the mid to low 20s on the north shore of Lake Pontchartrain, St. Tammany Parish officials have opened a warming shelter for those who need to escape the chill.

As of 7 p.m., residents in need can shelter at Thompson Baptist Church, 59008 Louisiana Highway 433, Slidell. And, parish officials said, on both Thursday and Friday, beginning at 7 p.m., residents can shelter in the gym at John Slidell Park, 105 Robert Blvd., Slidell.

In addition, Tammany Utilities is asking all parish residents, to wrap their pipes and take the necessary precautions to prevent pipes from bursting. The Department of Animal Services also is urging pet and livestock owners to take special precautions to safeguard animals in their care, including bringing pets indoors.
