NEW YORK (AP) - A former top official at New York City’s education department has been named president of Bank Street College of Education.
The Morning Heights school says Shael Polakow-Suransky will take over on July 1 from Elizabeth Dickey, who’s retiring.
He’ll be the first alumnus of the school to serve as president.
Polakow-Suransky held the No. 2 position at the Education Department under the previous two chancellors.
He told The New York Times (https://nyti.ms/1aGqmNJ ) he’ll work with the city to train more teachers in early childhood education as Mayor Bill de Blasio pushes for a pre-K plan for all 4 year olds.
He says he also wants to offer the school’s 1,000 graduate students more opportunities to test their skills in the classroom.
