PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) - Providence Mayor Angel Taveras and Rhode Island General Treasurer Gina Raimondo say they both want to limit the influence of independent campaign groups in the race for governor.
While there’s no deal yet, spokespeople for the two Democratic candidates said Tuesday the campaigns would like to strike an agreement on a pledge to limit spending by so-called super PACs, which can raise and spend unlimited amounts of money in a campaign.
Taveras supports a proposal that would require either campaign to donate money to charity whenever they are aided by a super PAC. Raimondo hasn’t agreed to that pledge, but her spokesman says she wants to discuss other proposals.
Cranston Mayor Allan Fung and Moderate Party founder Ken Block are running as Republicans.
