ANCHORAGE, Alaska (AP) - U.S. Sen. Lisa Murkowski says the state and not the federal government should make the call on whether the proposed Pebble Mine can be developed safely.
The Anchorage Daily News (https://bit.ly/LLXyuz) reports the federal Environmental Protection Agency released a study last week that concluded a large mine in the Bristol Bay region would threaten sockeye salmon.
U.S. Sen. Mark Begich calls the massive gold-and-copper project “the wrong mine in the wrong place for Alaska.”
Murkowski has been critical of an EPA veto of the mine at this point. She says the agency seems to be leading up to the point where it could take that step.
Murkowski says she wants to make sure that decisions about projects built on state of Alaska lands are made using a state process.
