NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (AP) - Newport News police say a 71-year-old Hampton man died after being shot in the head while driving home from church.

Police said Joseph Henry Williams Jr. was an innocent victim caught in the crossfire of a shooting.

According to the Virginian-Pilot (https://bit.ly/1e8gJVL ) the victim’s wife told police Williams had left church and picked up dinner and was driving home when the shooting occurred Sunday afternoon.

Police spokeswoman Holly McPherson said officers responding to a report of shots fired found Williams unconscious in the driver’s seat of a van. Officers said the victim was struck when two males were exchanging gunfire. No arrests were immediately made.
