BRUNSWICK, Ga. (AP) - Corporate jet manufacturer Gulfstream Aerospace Corp. announced plans Tuesday to expand its service center in Brunswick, a move that’s expected to bring 100 new jobs to the coastal Georgia city.
Gulfstream executives said the company will build a $25 million maintenance, repair and overhaul facility with 110,000 square feet of space. Headquartered in Savannah, Gulfstream already employs about 200 workers in Brunswick at its service center and a completions facility that installs furniture, entertainment systems and other finishing touches to its aircraft.
The company’s Brunswick employees worked on 150 planes in 2013, a year in which Gulfstream saw record service demand from customers worldwide, said Mark Burns, president of product support for Gulfstream.
“The growth of our fleet has increased the demand for aircraft maintenance and refurbishment,” Burns said. “Expanding in Brunswick keeps us well-positioned to continue to provide the best customer service and product support available.”
Gulfstream is scheduled to break ground on the Brunswick expansion this year and complete the project by May 2015.
Gov. Nathan Deal hailed the announcement, saying the new jobs Gulfstream is bringing to Brunswick should have a “significant economic impact” on the coastal community.
Gulfstream is a subsidiary of General Dynamics. The jet maker employs about 9,400 workers at its Savannah headquarters.
The company is growing its Brunswick operation in the middle of a $500 million expansion in Savannah that’s resulted in Gulfstream adding 2,500 jobs in three years.
