CHESAPEAKE, Va. (AP) - Chesapeake officials are considering placing limits on tethering dogs outdoors.
The Virginian-Pilot (https://bit.ly/1mo3X9X ) reports that the City Council will consider a proposed dog tethering ordinance later this month.
The ordinance would make it illegal to leave dogs unattended outdoors on leashes, chains or cables for more than an hour. It also would require tethers to be at least three times the length of a dog’s body.
The ordinance also would prohibit tethering dogs younger than 6 months or dogs in heat.
Violators would face a $250 fine.
Virginia Beach, Norfolk and Portsmouth limit tethering to three hours in a 24-hour period and set other restrictions. Suffolk and Hampton have banned the practice.
