MADISON, Wis. (AP) - The Wisconsin Assembly is poised to take up a bill this week that would bar employers from asking workers or job applicants for access to their social media accounts such as Facebook.
The push to pass such laws is gaining momentum across the country as employers ask for workers’ user names and passwords for personal accounts. Some employers say they need access to protect proprietary information or trade secrets in order to comply with federal financial regulations. Others see it as an invasion of privacy.
The state Senate passed the bill 33-0 in November. The Assembly is set to take it up on Tuesday. Approval would send the proposal to Gov. Scott Walker for his signature.
