DALLAS (AP) - Unpaid balances for drivers who don’t pay for using the North Texas Tollway might not be as expensive as first thought.

The Dallas Morning News (https://dallasne.ws/1hFKvoZ ) reported Monday that violators must call the North Texas Tollway Authority to find out how much they now owe. More than 70,000 drivers individually have at least 100 unpaid tolls - together owing more than $53 million.

The NTTA board last year overhauled how it financially penalizes drivers who don’t have TollTags and refuse to pay when billed.

Chairman Kenneth Barr says just adding penalties doesn’t help people meet their obligations.

Instead of being fined $6.60 per unpaid toll, such drivers now face fines between $10 and $25 per pending invoice.
