LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) - New developments in Lincoln would have to include stormwater management systems under a proposal the Lincoln City Council is expected to vote on next week.
The Lincoln Journal Star (https://bit.ly/1beibVT ) reports the council could require new developments that are larger than one acre to install the systems to help slow water runoff, which may have urban pollution, such as animal waste or fertilizer.
The systems may include native grasses and ridges of soil that act like dams.
Ben Higgins, an engineer in the city’s watershed management division, says research shows it is more effective to have a number of small systems instead of one big system to address water quality.
Brad Hulse, of the Realtors Association of Lincoln, says he is concerned about cost.
