OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) - U.S. Rep. James Lankford will hold a press conference to discuss his plans regarding this year’s special election for an open U.S. Senate seat.
The 45-year-old Edmond Republican will announce his decision at 1:30 p.m. Monday at the Oklahoma History Center in Oklahoma City.
U.S. Sen. Tom Coburn said last week he would forego the last two years of his term amid a recurrence of cancer, and his decision has turned a somewhat predictable 2014 election cycle on its head.
Lankford is a two-term congressman from the 5th District who has risen quickly in the House GOP leadership. A longtime director of a Baptist youth summer camp, he was a political unknown when he emerged from a crowded Republican primary field in 2010 and won the open U.S. House seat.
