WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. (AP) - A group of Afghan teachers has arrived at Purdue University for a nine-week training program and a taste of America’s higher education system.
The 19 teachers who specialize in disciplines ranging from physics to English literature arrived Jan. 11 at the West Lafayette campus. They’re the largest group to date to take part in Purdue’s Afghan Junior Faculty Development Program.
Seven teachers who took part in last year’s program went on to earn Fulbright or other scholarships that enabled them to continue their studies in the U.S. or Europe.
This year’s program runs through March and includes an intensive, one-week English program, classes in the teacher’s field of study and a sampling of student life such as a Big Ten basketball game and Purdue convocations.
