MADRID (AP) - Real Madrid says defender Raphael Varane has returned to training with the team for the first time since being sidelined in November due to problems with his right knee.

The 20-year-old France international underwent surgery on his right knee after injuring it in May last year.

After recovering, Varane made six appearances this season, before swelling in his knee forced him to stop playing again.

Madrid visits Espanyol on Tuesday in the first leg of their Copa del Rey quarterfinal.
