POWDERLY, Ky. (AP) - A memorial service was held for Phil Everly near Central City, where the Everly Brothers entertained for years at a homecoming benefit.
About 200 people attended the memorial on Saturday where several acts performed songs by the duo.
Phil Everly died Jan. 3 at 74. With his brother, Don Everly, the duo had 19 top 40 hits between 1957 and 1962. They were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1986 and are members of the Country Music Hall of Fame.
The Everly Brothers began the homecoming concerts in 1988 and continued through 2001 to help raise scholarship money and funds for other projects.

NEWPORT, Ky. (AP) - Sweet Pea is pregnant.
The shark ray at the Newport Aquarium in northern Kentucky is expecting as many as six pups. Aquarium officials say this marks the first time a shark ray has become pregnant while in captivity.
Sweet Pea was the first shark ray to go on display in the Western Hemisphere. She arrived at the Newport Aquarium in 2005 as an adolescent. Two years later, the addition of a rare male shark ray named Scooter resulted in the establishment of the institution’s Shark Ray Breeding Program.
The aquarium’s general curator, Mark Dvornak, told The Kentucky Enquirer (https://bit.ly/1eIz39whttps://bit.ly/1eIz39w ) that after the pups are born, some will go on display in Newport while others will likely go to other aquariums and zoos.
“We are thrilled with this development,” Dvornak said. “The pregnancy is a testament to the hard work and dedication our husbandry and veterinary teams have given these many years to better understand these remarkable animals.”
Dvornak said Newport Aquarium is considered a leader in the husbandry of shark rays and is often consulted by staff at aquariums and zoos throughout the world. He added little is known about the prehistoric-looking creature typically found in tropical waters such as the Indian Ocean, the western Pacific and the Red Sea. Because of their wide heads and fins, shark rays appear to be a cross between a sting ray and a shark.

FRANKFORT, Ky. (AP) - The Kentucky Supreme Court is set to hear an appeal in the long-running case of an escaped inmate from an Oklahoma prison facing a death sentence in the slaying of a Kentucky distillery worker.
The justices will hear the case of 56-year-old Michael Dale St. Clair on Feb. 13 in Frankfort. St. Clair is appealing the conviction and sentence out of Bullitt County in the 1991 shooting death of Francis “Frank” Brady of Bardstown.
St. Clair has also been sentenced to death in Hardin County on a charge of capital kidnapping stemming from Brady’s disappearance from a rest stop along Interstate 65.
Prosecutors said Brady and another escaped inmate, Dennis Gene Reese, were on a multi-state crime spree when they kidnapped Brady to steal his truck and later killed him near Lebanon Junction.
Reese and St. Clair had broken out of the county jail in Durant, Okla., on Sept. 19, 1991. At the time, St. Clair was serving four life sentences for murder and Reese was awaiting trial on charges of strangling and beating a woman to death.
The two men are also charged in New Mexico with the 1991 kidnapping and shooting death of 22-year-old Timothy Keeling of Denver.

FRANKFORT, Ky. (AP) - Roughly 200 students at Kentucky State University were cutting class this last week, but not getting in trouble for it.
The school had cut classes for them.
The Frankfort university sent an email to hundreds of students on Wednesday saying they had been dropped from their courses and would have until the late registration date on Friday to make a minimum payment on their accounts.
University spokeswoman Felicia Lewis told The State-Journal (https://bit.ly/LkTvoihttps://bit.ly/LkTvoi ) students received the notices because they did not make their minimum required payment as part of the new KSU Student Balance Required Payment Schedule. Lewis said she can’t confirm the number of students who have been dropped from university courses.
“If they’re not registered in classes they don’t stay in the dorms,” Lewis said.
The KSU Student Balance Required Payment Schedule is designed to require students to pay off a portion of the balance on their account that has accumulated from previous semesters.
