SEEFELD, Austria (AP) - Defending overall champion Eric Frenzel of Germany won his third straight World Cup event Sunday to become the first winner of a Nordic Combined Triple, a new format that adds the results of three competitions in one weekend.
“This is great. I have no explanation for it, it all went just really well,” Frenzel said. “This triple competition is all about consistency so I knew I was in a good position after winning the sprint Friday.”
Frenzel was second after the ski jumping and went ahead of the field early in the 15-kilometer cross-country race. The German finished in 38 minutes, 26.2 seconds to beat Norway’s Haavard Klemetsen, who led after the jumping, by 21.2 seconds. Magnus Moan of Norway came 29.1 back in third.
Olympic champion Jason Lamy Chappuis of France was 1:41.0 behind in ninth.
It was Fenzel’s sixth victory in Seefeld and 15th overall.
“I like coming here,” the German said. “Somehow the hill and the track here seem to really suit me.”
The triple competition started with one jump and a 5K cross-country race Friday, followed by a jump and a 10K race the next day. Only the top-30 finishers from Saturday were allowed to start in the final event, where double World Cup points were awarded.
Frenzel further extended his lead in the overall standings. The German has 753 points, 236 clear of Klemetsen, who climbed from fifth to second. Lamy Chappuis dropped to third with 471 points.
The Nordic combined World Cup continues with a regular event in Oberstdorf, Germany, next weekend.
