DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) - Iowa residents dealt with another blast of winter weather that snarled interstate traffic and threatened to dump nearly a half-foot of snow on some parts of the state Saturday.

All of Iowa was under some type of weather advisory Saturday from the National Weather Service, with most of the northwestern half under a winter weather advisory. Much of the southwestern half was under a wind advisory, with gusts of 45 mph or higher expected until sunset.

Winds pushed wind chill readings Saturday morning to below zero in some areas of northeast Iowa .

In Iowa City, a multivehicle pileup blamed on blowing snow and slick roads shut down the eastbound lanes of Interstate 80 on Saturday morning. At least one lane had reopened by late morning.

“It’s a mess,” Iowa State Patrol Capt. Mike Winter told the Iowa City Press-Citizen. “I advise people not to travel in eastern Iowa for the time being if they don’t need to.”

A fast-moving winter storm was expected dump as much as 5 inches of snow in and around the Dubuque area on Saturday, according to the National Weather Service. Up to 2 inches of snow was expected in the northeastern counties, including the city of Waterloo.

In the northeastern corner of Iowa, 3 to 4 inches of snow were expected, worsening already poor driving conditions.
