SPRINGFIELD, Ore. (AP) - The city of Springfield plans to hire a contractor to enforce downtown parking rules.

The Register-Guard (https://is.gd/CK3ZHI ) newspaper reports that only city police officers can write parking tickets under current city rules - and they rarely do it.

The City Council is set to approve an ordinance Feb. 3 that will allow a private contractor to handle the task.

Though there is no metered parking in Springfield, more than half the on-street spaces have posted time limits, ranging from 10 minutes to two hours.

A city parking study found that drivers regularly ignore the limits.

City officials expect demand for parking spaces to increase in the coming years because of downtown redevelopment.
