OAK LAWN, Ill. (AP) - Authorities say a Chicago college student has died after being shot during an armed robbery despite handing his cellphone over to the thieves.

The Chicago Sun-Times reports (https://bit.ly/Ly47AR) 19-year-old Kevin Baker died Saturday morning at Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn.

Baker was a student at Harold Washington College in Chicago. Police say he was walking with his cousin Thursday afternoon when two people got out of a van and demanded their phones. The cousins gave up their cellphones but one of the robbers still opened fire, hitting Baker in the head.

Family friend Earnestine Barnette tells the Sun-Times that Baker wasn’t in trouble with the law and was known as “the college kid that don’t hang out.”
