CHICAGO (AP) - A Chicago man with a history of domestic violence has been sentenced to 20 years in prison for assaulting his former girlfriend and holding her against her will while their two young children watched.

Cook County Judge Evelyn Clay sentenced 43-year-old James Martin during a hearing Thursday in Chicago. Martin was convicted of felonies including kidnapping and domestic battery for an incident that took place in 2012.

Cook County State’s Attorney Anita Alvarez’ office says Martin assaulted the victim after learning she had a new boyfriend. He also carried her into his home and held her against her will. The assault left the victim with a concussion and ruptured ear drum.

Alvarez thanked Assistant State’s Attorney Shawn McCarthy and the Chicago Police Department for their work on the case.
