NORFOLK, Neb. (AP) - The Environmental Protection Agency says crews will begin demolition and soil excavation work at a former manufactured gas plant Superfund site in Norfolk.

The EPA says work will begin Monday and is scheduled to be finished by the end of April.

The site has been contaminated with a number of toxic chemicals.

Plans call for excavating contaminated soil to a depth of 10 feet below the ground surface, and then talking samples from the area. If samples show contamination exceeds cleanup goals, the excavation will continue.

After the work, the EPA will continue groundwater monitoring.

The project will cost an estimated $2.8 million.
