CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (AP) - University of Virginia officials outlined the university’s efforts to attract high-achieving, low-income students at a White House summit.
The university says President Teresa Sullivan and Ben Castleman of the Curry School of Education attended Thursday’s meeting with President Barack Obama and other administration officials. Leaders of other universities and public and private organizations also attended the meeting on increasing college opportunities.
The U.Va. administrators focused on research by Castleman and Sarah Turner of the Economics Department on low-income and first-generation college students. Sullivan said their findings have prompted the university to revamp its outreach to potential Virginia applicants from lower economic backgrounds.
