AUBURN HILLS, Mich. (AP) - State transportation officials have announced the emergency closing of a deteriorating Interstate 75 overpass north of Detroit.

The Oakland Press and Detroit Free Press report that the Michigan Department of Transportation announced the closure Friday of the University Drive overpass in the Oakland County city of Auburn Hills.

Transportation department spokeswoman Diane Cross says that inspectors found “a critical condition” with steel beams on the 50-year-old bridge.

Crews plan to install temporary support beams within the week and engineers will determine a permanent solution.

Cross says the freeway and exit ramps are expected to remain open during the bridge closure.

University Drive leads to Oakland University, which straddles the Auburn Hills-Rochester Hills city limit.
