PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) - Talks between the Portland school district and teachers association stalled Thursday night without a deal.
Portland Public Schools Superintendent Carole Smith says negotiators thought they were getting close to an agreement; now they are disappointed at a widening gap.
The schools and Portland Association of Teachers have been talking about a new contract for nine months. Health insurance and a limit on workload have been key issues. The association represents 2,900 educators.
The district says a longer school year, salary increases and early retirement benefits for teachers are stumbling blocks.
No further talks are scheduled.
