CHICAGO (AP) - Some of the Illinois’ top elected officials and religious leaders are gathering to commemorate the life of Martin Luther King Jr.
U.S. Sen. Dick Durbin, Gov. Pat Quinn, Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel, the Rev. Michael Pfleger (FLAY’-gur) of Chicago and Illinois House Majority Leader Barbara Flynn Currie were among the attendees at Friday morning’s annual interfaith breakfast.
The event is hosted by the city and is in its 28th year.
Emanuel focused his comments on economic opportunity for people living in poverty. He says there’s more to civil rights than entering the voting booth.
Later during the event, a person protesting the mass closures of several Chicago Public Schools briefly heckled another speaker.
