PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) - The Governor’s Workforce Board is accepting applications for grants of up to $40,000 from Rhode Island companies that want to help employees upgrade their job skills.

The board said Friday it will release a total of $700,000 in funding this year. Companies can apply for matching grants of between $5,000 and $40,000. Any business in the state that contributes to the Job Development Fund is eligible to apply.

The grants are for skills training for current employees.

Businesses that intend to apply are strongly encouraged to attend a pre-proposal conference at the Department of Labor and Training on Jan. 27.

Proposals are due at the workforce board in Cranston on Feb. 18.
