CHICAGO (AP) - The Chicago Cubs have agreed to one-year contracts with outfielder Nate Schierholtz, infielder Luis Valbuena and relievers James Russell and Pedro Strop, avoiding arbitration.
Schierholtz is set to earn $5 million next season after batting .251 and setting career highs in home runs (21) and RBIs (68). Valbuena agreed to a $1.71 million deal. Russell is due $1,775,000 and Strop $1,325,000.
The Cubs also exchanged arbitration figures with starters Jeff Samardzija and Travis Wood, second baseman Darwin Barney and outfielder Justin Ruggiano on Friday. Samardzija filed for $6.2 million and the Cubs $4.4 million. Wood filed for $4.25 million, with the club at $3.5 million. Barney asked for $2.8 million with the team was at $1.8 million, while Ruggiano filed for $2.45 million and the team countered at $1.6 million.
