A California boy, 16, was flown for emergency hospital treatment after a man smashed him on the head with a hammer, during a brief but gruesome encounter on a sidewalk across the street from Chino High School.

The suspect fled after the attack, but police tracked him down and arrested him. Charged with suspicion of attempted murder was 48-year-old Gregory Richmond, said City of Chino spokeswoman Michelle Van Der Linden, in The Associated Press.

The boy, who’s not named in the report, was flown by helicopter to a nearby hospital and he remains in critical condition.

Police are still puzzled about the motive for the attack, and say they’re not sure if the two knew each other.
