Two ATF agents on federal business in an Oklahoma neighborhood who offered to help with a local police search for a teenage shooting suspect were rewarded for their outreach with gunfire: They happened on the 19-year-old and he shot and wounded them.
CNN reported that Ardmore police began scouring the area for the suspect, Henry Jackson, 19, after a 19-year-old woman reported he shot her and fled on Wednesday night. On Thursday, Mr. Jackson was accused of shooting a man in the hip.
Officers were in process of searching for Mr. Jackson when they came across a couple of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives federal agents who were in the area, investigating another matter, CNN reported. The two ATF agents offered to help with the search, said Sgt. Ryan Hunnicutt, with the Ardmore Police Department.
The agents then stumbled on Mr. Jackson in his car late Thursday night – and the suspect began open firing on them, before fleeing, CNN said.
Both agents were wounded, but not critically. Local police then tracked Mr. Jackson as he drove the city streets. Mr. Jackson fired at officers and they shot back, ultimately killing him, Mr. Hunnicutt said, CNN reported.
The motive for Mr. Jackson’s shooting spree is not yet clear. The names of the ATF agents involved were not released.
