MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) - Alabama State University has been investigating reports that a woman was raped by several men in a campus dorm.

Five suspects are involved in the case, said Henry Davis, director of the school’s public safety department.

The alleged crime occurred on Nov. 1 in Card Hall and involved an 18-year-old student, who left the school after the incident and before the fall semester ended, WSFA-TV reported (https://bit.ly/19yVbpk ).

The suspects were taken into custody, but never formally charged with any crimes, Davis said. The case has been forwarded to the Montgomery County District Attorney, school officials said in a statement.

The university initially refused to provide reports about the case, the Montgomery station reported.

“I’ve been told there’s no record,” school spokesman Kenneth Mullinax told WSFA after it inquired about the case.

Later, the first page of an incident report was made public by campus police.

“As soon as we got to a point where we felt comfortable in releasing that information where it would not compromise the investigation then that report was released,” Davis said.

“At no time did the university take any action to try to cover up the story,” Davis added. “Our not releasing the report immediately was done because the investigation was still going on.”

University officials didn’t inform students about the case at the time.

“It was not put out to the students at that time because it was an after the matter fact,” Davis said. “When the victim reported the incident, the incident had already transpired — there was no danger.”
