The Wall Street Journal’s David Bird has been missing since Saturday afternoon and hundreds are currently on the search.
The 55-year-old energy reporter was last seen leaving his home in Long Hill Township, N.J., the newspaper said.
Hundreds of law enforcement officials and volunteers are scouring the swamps around the Passaic River.
Mr. Bird’s wife Nancy said he left the house at 4:30 p.m. Saturday to go for a walk.
Sources close to the family told NBC News that Mr. Bird’s credit card was used in Mexico Wednesday night. The family fears the energy reporter’s coverage of OPEC may be related to his disappearance.
He had a liver transplant nearly 10 years ago and was recovering from a gastrointestinal virus, Chief Michael Mazzeo of the Long Hill Township Police Department told Fox News.
“We’ve been searching portions of the Passaic River in the event that he may have slipped and fell into the water,” Mazzeo said. “We’ve also searched all of the roadsides to see if maybe someone hit him with a car because some of these roads are pitch black.”
