Elkhart, Ind., police responding to a late-night shooting at a local grocery store said three have been killed: A woman who was shopping, a woman who was working and the gunman.
Indiana State Police Sgt. Trent Smith said in Fox News that police responded to Martin’s Super Market about 10 p.m. on Wednesday and found a suspect with a semi-automatic handgun on scene, pointing his weapon at a victim, who escaped injury. Police shot and killed him in the store after trading gunfire for several tense seconds, Fox News said.
Police say the shooter, who was in his early 20s, walked to an aisle of the store, shot and killed a woman, then walked to another aisle and did the same to another female victim, figured around age 40. One of the victims, a female in her late teens to early 20s, was an employee.
“That’s today’s society, unfortunately,” Sgt. Smith told local WNDU.com. “We live in that world. There is not a day that goes by it seems anymore that we aren’t learning about a school shooting or at a business. We hope this would never come to our hometown, and here it is.”
Police reportedly found a semi-automatic, large-caliber handgun along with a large knife near the shooter’s body.
The identities of the dead have not yet been released.
