Russell Johnson, who played Professor Roy Hinkley in “Gilligan’s Island,” has died at age 89.
The actor’s wife, Constance, confirmed that the TV star died in Washington early Thursday morning of kidney failure, ABC News reported.
“He died at home, peaceful, in his sleep at 5:21 am today,” she said. “[He was] a very brave guy who knew what he wanted, and he wanted to be at home.”
Dawn Wells, who played Mary Ann, said on Facebook, “My 2 favorite people are now gone. The professor past (sic) away this morning. My heart is broken.”
Miss Wells was referencing to Bob Denver, who played Gilligan and died in 2005.
“Russell was a true gentleman, a good father, a great friend, and ’the rest,’” she added.
Johnson served in World War II before pursuing an acting career, ABC News reported. He also appeared in “The Adventures of Superman,” “Alfred Hitchcock Presents” and “The Twilight Zone.”
Johnson is survived by his wife and daughter, Kim.
