CHICAGO (AP) - Metra has taken some rail cars out of service to repair damage from last week’s ice and snow, leaving trains shorter and more crowded.

The metropolitan Chicago commuter rail agency says it expects to have all those cars back in service by the end of the week.

The system’s Union Pacific lines were the most affected with 22 trains losing one car each on Monday. Eleven were returned to service Tuesday.

Interim CEO Don Orseno apologized for disruptions over the past week.

In one incident, passengers were left on an unheated outdoor platform for more than half an hour in subzero temperatures because the train suddenly switched to express service.

Orseno said he contacted Union Pacific, which operates the line, and received assurances it won’t happen again.
