SOUTHAMPTON, England (AP) - Southampton says chairman Nicola Cortese has resigned from his post at the Premier League club, a move that could jeopardize the position of manager Mauricio Pochettino.

Southampton posted a string of messages on its Twitter page on Wednesday in which the club’s owner, Katharina Liebherr, confirmed Cortese’s departure and said she would be taking over as non-executive chairman.

Liebherr says “it is business as usual and we will ensure that the manager, team and staff at the club have all the help and support they need.”

Pochettino, who was hired as manager in January 2013, said last season he wouldn’t stay on as manager if Cortese left.

Southampton is ninth in the league after an impressive start to the season.
