Spray-paint wielding vandals hit Plymouth Rock in Massachusetts, defacing the well-known monument with a blunt message: “LIES.”
Police haven’t yet arrested anybody, The Associated Press reported.
The vandalism occurred earlier this week, when an unknown individual – or group of individuals – sprayed the word with paint on a portion of the rock, near the engraving of “1620.” The date signifies the year the Pilgrims arrived in the New World.
The rock is placed in a sunken enclosure, on a bed of sand and surrounded by granite walls. Whoever vandalized the rock also defaced the walls of the monument, painting an obscene figure and spraying the phrase, “For a drug filled world” next to the capital letter A in a circle – similar to the symbol of anarchists, AP said.
The graffiti has already been removed, state Department of Conservation and Recreation officials said.
