SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (AP) - The couch where socialite Mary Todd received a gangly young lawyer named Abraham Lincoln will be restored.
The (Springfield) State Journal-Register reports (https://bit.ly/L1DIuh ) the Springfield Art Association has raised more than $4,500 to save the 180-year-old sofa.
The organization started an online fundraising campaign and met its goal with a few days to spare.
A Chicago outfit is restoring the furniture which has torn upholstery, loose casters and some veneer loss.
The couch first belonged to Todd’s sister and brother-in-law, Elizabeth and Ninian Edwards. She lived at the Edwards’ home before marrying Lincoln, who later became the 16th president.
The art association plans a Feb. 11 unveiling of the restored couch.
