WASHINGTON (AP) - The District of Columbia’s mayor has signed a bill that will raise the city’s minimum wage to $11.50 per hour in 2016.
Mayor Vincent Gray signed the measure Wednesday morning. The D.C. Council approved the increase last month.
The district’s current minimum wage is $8.25. The minimum wage will rise to $9.50 per hour this year on July 1, to $10.50 on July 1, 2015, and to $11.50 on July 1, 2016.
Gray clashed with the D.C. Council last year over raising wages for workers at major retailers. Gray vetoed a bill that would have forced large stores to pay employees $12.50 per hour after Wal-Mart threatened to pull out of plans for three stores if the wage bill became law.
The new minimum wage applies to all businesses.
