EVANSTON, Ill. (AP) - Civil rights activist Myrlie Evers-Williams is scheduled to speak at Northwestern University as part of the school’s weeklong commemoration of Martin Luther King Jr.

Other events on the Evanston and Chicago campuses include panel discussions, a film screening and student performances. The university has suspended classes on Monday for a full-day observance of Martin Luther King Jr. Day.

Evers-Williams was married to civil rights leader Medgar Evers when he was murdered in 1963. She speaks Jan. 27 at Northwestern’s Pick-Staiger Concert Hall in Evanston. Seating for the free event will be on a first-come, first-seated basis.

Another featured speaker is Nobel Peace Prize winner Warren M. Washington, an internationally recognized atmospheric scientist and climate researcher. He speaks Monday evening, the King holiday, at Alice Millar Chapel in Evanston.
