LAKE CHARLES, La. (AP) - Calcasieu Parish School Superintendent Wayne Savoy asked the school board to immediately begin looking for his replacement.

In an emotional and tearful speech on Tuesday, Savoy said that since becoming superintendent in 2006, he has enjoyed every minute of the job and is proud of the work he has done, but he is ready to spend time with his family.

Savoy said he will work with the board and the new superintendent for any length of time the members need to make the transition easy.

The American Press reports (https://bit.ly/1eOXZNb ) Annette Ballard, board president, will form a subcommittee at next month’s meeting to begin searching for candidates.

Savoy said he is excited about retirement. “I’ve been superintendent since 2006 and been in education since 1970 so it’s time,” he said.

“I’m getting a little older and everything becomes a little more important. This job has a tendency to consume an individual … but I can look back and see all the things that we accomplished and be proud.”

Savoy said he wanted to give the board plenty of time to find a candidate who is an educator with vision. “When that person is found, there may be a transition time or there may not,” he said. “But I will work with the board until then. The board has been very good to me.”
