DOTHAN, Ala. (AP) - A Houston County judge has upheld the suspension of a former Dothan police officer accused of violating the department’s social media guidelines.
The Dothan Eagle reports (https://bit.ly/1eT6gzv ) that Circuit Court Judge Butch Binford affirmed the department’s decision to suspend officer RaeMonica Carney in March 2013 for 10 days. Authorities have said Carney expressed personal views on Facebook about the way Los Angeles police pursued a man accused of killing a police officer.
Carney was suspended again in 2013 and was fired last month.
Carney’s attorney, Sonya Edwards, has said she and her client feel that the suspension violated Carney’s First Amendment rights and was retaliation for a discrimination and harassment claim she filed before she was suspended.
Before being her suspension, Carney served as the department’s community watch coordinator.
